I pay tens of thousands of dollars every year to be a student.

You would think that me paying all this money means I could take the classes I wanted to take. Within reason.
I understand when you restrict classes for certain reasons.
Like that class that you reserve for freshman? That’s cool, they need a break when it comes to registration woes.
Those classes that are only for art majors or dance majors? I’m fine with that. I mean it is important that people in their majors can get the classes they need without the rest of us taking up the space.

But you know.
That language class I want to take?
I should be able to take it.
I went through all the hoops and bells.
I waited patiently.
I even skipped class so I could attend the interview that was scheduled.
Just so I could take this class.

But apparently I cant.
Apparently. I cant take this class because of something I have no control over.
Because I was born into a family that spoke this language.
And as a consequence of being born, I picked up the ability to pronounce the sounds fairly well. I picked up the ability to comprehend words at a child’s level.
And because of those simple reasons. I am too advanced to take the only class that could have fit into my schedule.

Really?
Is that really fair?

After all the waiting?
After skipping class?

Is that what my tens of thousands of dollars are buying me?
The ability to TRY to take a class. But to be unable to take it in the end because my proficiency level is slightly above what you were looking for. To be unable to take it because of all these extra things that had to be done and then to be unable to even try and rearrange things so I can take the course because all the classes that I could have taken are already filled.

Is that fair?

I guess it is.

I guess it’s fair because things are still the way they are.

It doesn’t matter that I got so excited.
Because I thought I would be able to learn my own language without being discriminated against.
I got so excited because maybe the next time I see my parent’s friends that I would be able to speak to them. And then they wouldn’t tell my parents that they raised me wrong.

I got so excited. Because for once, whenever I met an adult they wouldn’t tell me that I wasn’t a real Chinese girl. Because I would be able to read and write and speak and understand at a more proficient level.

I was so excited.

But I guess that was wrong.

I guess I should not have been excited.

Because being so excited makes it hurt all the more.

And I know life isn’t fair.

But was it really too much to ask, in return for thousands of dollars a year, to be able to take just one class for my own personal reasons?

Thank you for this lesson.

I know to not be so hopeful in the future.

Because I know now how much that can hurt.
Because I know now how upset it makes me.

Has anyone made a videogame where you’re a princess locked at the top of a tower and have to fight your way down to ground level? Because dang.

Like, think about it: you’re given this nice little room and no objectives at all and when you open the door the guard says ‘stay in there’ so you wait and nothing happens and you open the door again and try and walk out and the guard pushes you back in and says things like ‘you’re our prisoner’ and ‘where are you going, you’re stuck here’ and ‘are you trying to meet your prince? he won’t ever get up THIS high’ and ‘get back inside before I get mad’. But you can pick up a vase of flowers, and you can swing it around. And the thing is all the guards are expecting the hero to be battling his way up, and all this one wimpy little guard at the top is posted to your room for is to push you back into your room, so you can smash him over the head because he’s just not expecting it, and then steal his weapons. And after that you find that the guards are always bigger and stronger than you—and they get bigger and stronger every level down—but you can generally manage to get the first shot in because they’re waiting for the hero, and you’re the princess. And maybe there’s puzzles and stuff too, but you have to solve them backwards, working your way along from end to start, because they’re all set up for the hero. And when you get the bottom and you have the fight of your life because the guards are massed up waiting for the hero, tons of them with awesome weapons and armor and spells and you think it’s the boss battle, but when they’re all dead and the final ground-level door is free to open the credits don’t roll. And you realize there must be one more fight outside the doors, too, before you’re free, so you equip the best armor and weapons and potions you can find and go outside and you fight this one huge lone badass man on a badass horse in the sunlight. Then he’s finally defeated, and lying in the grass, and his horse is yours, and the credits still aren’t rolling. And you look at his corpse and you see he’s got a locket on, and in that locket is a picture of your face.

And then you realize that that was the hero.

And then the credits roll.

You probably won’t find it, it has never been released outside of the Ghibli Museum and you can only watch it over there, unfortunately.

So far, this video is the best option I’ve been able to find.

Of course, if anyone knows a better version, sharing would be awesome and you’ll get my love forever
